What is a migraine?
Migraine is a common chronic disease characterized by recurrent attacks of headache. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in ten people suffer from this disease. Migraine is more common for people in North, South, Central America and Europe. According to WHO, it is also a common cause of disability. Approximately 75% of all people who experience migraine – females. The medical literature confirms that migraine reduces the quality of life and can cause violations of physical, social and professional image of a person’s life.
The exact mechanisms of migraine remain unknown. However, new medical researches explain some of disease syndromes.

How Botox is used to treat the migraine?
In mid-1990 patients were treated with botulinum toxin for other reasons when doctors noted a decrease in cases of headaches. This gave a background for the clinical testing of botulinum toxin for various types of headache. There was a research involving 1384 patients with chronic migraine. In this study, patients were randomly selected and treated with Botox or placebo (water). The study proved that Botox is effective in reducing the headache for most of the patients. No serious irreversible side effects were also observed when tested Botox for headache treatment.
It is believed that botulinum toxin reduces or blocks the release of neurotransmitters, which generate headaches. It was also proved that Botox reduces pain in a number of diseases such as cervical cancer, dystonia, neuropathic pain, pain, spasticity, myofascial pain, and pain in the bladder.
