Although rare, but nail fungal infections may result in pain in the toes or fingertips. Many suffers complained about emit a foul odor. This common in patients, whose nail fungus infections spreads to the toes or feet skin.

In order to diagnose nail fungus infections you need to see your doctor, who will examine the toe, nail and skin, will take debris that is scraped from underneath the nail, clip a part of your nail and send it to the lab for special fungal culture test. Several other conditions can result in symptoms similar to fungal nail infection like some forms of psoriasis, dermatitis, trauma or rare condition called yellow nail syndrome.

What nail fungus treatments are available?

Treatment of nail fungus infections depends on the clinical type of the onychomycosis:

Oral antifungal medications: Itraconazole (Sporanox), Fluconazole (Diflucan), and Terbinafine (Lamisil).

Topical ointments, creams and lacquer: Ciclopirox (Penlac) and creams Terbenafine (Lamisil), Ciclopirox (Loprox).

Numerous over-the-counter remedies have not proved to be effective.

It usually takes several months before the infected nail clears and replaced by uninfected one. Use of topical remedies can clear nail fungal infections, but often does not completely cure the infection.
