What nail fungus treatments are available?
Treatment of nail fungus infections depends on the clinical type of the onychomycosis:
Oral antifungal medications: Itraconazole (Sporanox), Fluconazole (Diflucan), and Terbinafine (Lamisil).
Topical ointments, creams and lacquer: Ciclopirox (Penlac) and creams Terbenafine (Lamisil), Ciclopirox (Loprox).
Numerous over-the-counter remedies have not proved to be effective. It usually takes several months before the infected nail clears and replaced by uninfected one. Use of topical remedies can clear nail fungal infections, but often does not completely cure the infection.
Treating fungal nail infection might be challenging. Rate of fungal infection recurrence remains high, even with newer topical or systemic/oral medications.
